Project Schone Schie – 5 Fragen an einen Plastikrebellen.

Hier kommt eine weitere Folge unserer Serie „5 Fragen an …“  – und wir sind wieder mal in den Niederlanden. Diesmal haben wir mit Tommy Kleyn gesprochen – und haben wieder mal in unserem direkten Nachbarland sowas wie einen Seelenverwandten gefunden. Denn Tommy ist auch ein Ozeankind – und hat eine wundervolle Idee. Mit seinem Project Schone Schie (schone = sauber, schie = ein Fluss in den Niederlanden) hat es sich Tommy zur Aufgabe gemacht, in seiner Heimat, vor seiner Haustür sauber zu machen. Und genau wie wir ruft er Menschen dazu auf, es ihm gleich zu tun. Tommy ist nicht mehr allein, Millionen von Menschen hat er mit seinem Projekt bereits erreicht! Wir sind also wieder mal in den Niederlanden – wie auch schon vor ein paar Monaten (hier gehts zu Plastic Whale).

Generell müssen wir sagen: unsere Nachbarn sind, was Plastikmüll betrifft, uns Deutschen ein bisschen voraus. Zwar ist die Aufmerksamkeit auch in unserem Nachbarland bei Weitem noch nicht groß genug – dennoch lesen wir sehr oft von Menschen aus den Niederlanden, die mit neuen Ideen zur Bekämpfung der Problematik um die Ecke kommen.

So, genug geschrieben … hier kommen unsere 5 Fragen und Tommys 5 Antworten!

1) What is „Project Schone Schie“? What makes it so special?

Project Schone Schie is a plastic clean up project from The Netherlands. It started with one guy taking 30 minutes out of his day to clean up plastic pollution at the riverbank near his home. Through social media his actions went viral and today, an estimate 16 to 25 million people world wide have learned about this project. It’s kind of a hard to state that your own project is special, but I think it appeals to people because the project focusses on solving the plastic problem by taking responsibility for it trough positive, individual action.

Coole Sache – und 16 bis 25 Millionen Menschen sind natürlich der absolute Wahnsinn. Und es war ähnlich wie bei uns – Tommy hat seine eigene Komfortzone verlassen und einfach angefangen, etwas zu tun. Was sind schon 30 Minuten? Und heute erreicht er mit seinem Projekt Millionen von Menschen! Und das Wichtigste: Er übernimmt Verantwortung!

2) Your idea – whats the background? Was there a special moment of inflection?

I’m a graphic designer and a huge fan of nature. If I had been better at math I’d probably would have become a biologist. I have known about the plastic problem for over ten years. And it worried me. Whenever I had time, I wondered how I could contribute to solving this problem. Several ideas came to mind, but none of them would work. They were either too ambitious, too costly or too impractical.

After moving to a new house, I used to pass a very polluted stretch of river bank every day on my commute to my studio. And one day (my wife was pregnant with our first son back then) I wondered what it would be like to ride my bike there with our son. It struck me that kids always ask ‘Why’. So I imagined what I would answer if he’d ask me why it was such a mess there. There were two possible answers. One was to say that ‘bad’ people had put it there. The other one was: ‘I never cleaned it up’. In that instant, something clicked with me. The next day I went back there with a grabber and a bag and started cleaning.

Stellt Euch das mal vor … eines Tages stellen uns die Kinder diese eine Frage: WARUM? Was antworten wir? Wir sollten uns diese Frage bereits heute stellen – was bringt es uns in einem solchen Moment mit dem Finger auf andere zu zeigen? Was sind wir für ein Vorbild für unsere Kids?

Gleiches und noch viel deutlicher wird es, wenn man das auf Tiere projiziert, die kurz vor der Ausrottung stehen. Die Lederrücken-Schildkröte beispielsweise lebte schon, als es noch Dinosaurier gab. Und durch die Verschmutzung der Weltmeere und den industriellen Fischfang könnte es sie schon bald nicht mehr geben. Und dann sieht unser Nachwuchs Bilder und stellt irgendwann fest, dass WIR sie zu Lebzeiten noch gesehen haben, geschweige denn dass wir sie vielleicht hätten retten können.

Möchten wir die Erde wirklich, ganz ehrlich, so für unsere Kinder hinterlassen? Mit mehr Plastikpartikeln im Wasser als es Fische gibt? Ohne viele der Tiere, die wir noch live sehen durften?

3) The Netherlands – very modern, progressive – also shown by the fact that you have quite a few sponsors already, you have The Ocean Cleanup, Plastic Whale, Project Schone Schie and lots of innovative recycling ideas – what do you think why they seem to be more progressive compared to other European countries?

I haven’t seen any solid data on this, but my guess would be that it has to do with our geography. With 394 people per square kilometer, the Netherlands is the most densely populated country in Europe. So there’s very little room for the problem to ‘hide’. And a large part of our country is below sea level. The whole country is riddled with canals, ship locks and pumping stations to keep our feet dry. Plastic litter tends to collect at those locations, making the magnitude of the problem very visible. We’re also a sea going nation. We have the 3rd largest port in the world, so we have a pretty good idea of the scale of the plastic problem globally. And we’re a pragmatic people. Problem solving is in our nature. Plus, we’re pretty keen on making a buck. We know plastic pollution is a world wide problem, so chances are that if (when?) the Dutch come up with a solution for it, we’ll have a global market for that solution.

Ganz schön clever, unsere Nachbarn. Und auch ohne wissenschaftliche Daten zu erheben – ständig lesen wir von tollen Menschen aus den Niederlanden! Da werden CleanUps gemacht, dann erfinden Sie eine mobile Recycling-Box in einem Container, sie forschen an neuen Werkstoffen. Auch der weltbekannte Bojan Slat mit seinem OceanCleanUp-Projekt kommt aus den Niederlanden. 

4) How would you describe the awareness of the Dutch majority about the worldwide plastic pollution problem?

I believe there’s a growing awareness amongst the public, but the urgency of the matter certainly isn’t clear enough with everybody yet. Through Project Schone Schie, I try to get people involved and aware about the severity of the problem. By confronting them with the sheer amount of litter on what’s basically their doorstep, but also by showing them that by working together, we can solve this problem fairly easily. After the last big cleanup I organized, I overheard several people saying: ‘I had no idea things were this bad’. That truly made me feel like I had accomplished something.

Ja, da haben wir in Deutschland auch noch eine ganze Menge zu tun.

Aber solche Sachen hören wir auch immer wieder von Euch! Vielen Menschen macht es Spaß, Müll zu sammeln, Aufmerksamkeit zu erzeugen und einfach nur was Gutes zu tun! Und viele von Euch wundern sich auch, wie viel Müll dann doch zusammenkommt – trotz Stadtreinigung & Co.!

Auch unsere Events machen uns allen das immer wieder deutlich – Du sammelst 500 Gramm, wir addieren es zu den gesammelten Werken aller andere Ozeankinder und zusammen sammeln wir mehr als eine Tonne! Einen besseren Beweis gibt es fast nicht – jeder Beitrag ist wichtig und ein Teil von etwas Großem!

5) When it comes to plastic pollution – if a fairy comes to you right now giving you one wish which could make the world a better place from one moment to another – what would be your wish?

It might come as a surprise, but I’m not against plastics. It’s a fantastic product with amazing properties. But I do think we don’t use it properly, though. So, I would have the fairy clear the world’s waters from plastic and close the production chain of those plastics. Already there’s enough plastic produced to last humanity for ever, we just need to start reusing it.
